I use the Cokin filter system, and I was able to purchase my filters on eBay for a fraction of the regular cost, at which the filters are listed, in most photographic supply catalogs and websites. One Diffuser filter alone costs $9.95 in a catalog, while a single filter or lot of filters of can be purchased on eBay for $2.00-$7.50 and up.
All in all, using a Diffuser is a very nice way to expand your photographic portfolio. It can turn ordinary portraits into extraordinary works of art!
