Picturesque Portraits Part 3

Lenses

Portrait lenses have a focal range
from 85mm to 105mm.
This range isolates the subject,
blurs the background,
and doesn't distort the face.

Camera Angles

Move around and experiment
with different perspectives!

Shooting up at your subject
emphasizes strength and
achievement. :)

Shooting down at your subject
emphasizes innocence
and vulnerability. :)

  4. Allison, thanks for reminding me about the lens ranges for portraits. I knew there was something about that, because otherwise you could get distortion, but I'd forgotten. And of course...when I was shooting my sister earlier this week I was probably using a "NO-NO!" lens so some of them were distorted/looked funny, but thankfully I had enough turn out.

BUT now I'm wondering...why do they consider the 50mm a portrait lens?? Do you have any idea?

  5. Ruth Ann,

Truth be told, I find myself focusing on posing and lighting rather than on focal range or distortion....I need to pay more attention to that!
I've been using my fixed 50mm lens for most of my recent portraits, and I don't see a whole lot of distortion, so it would seem that 50mm is okay, just keep an eye on it :) lol....literally... :D
